381% increase in Gen Ys dating online. They can't be all desperate.
Online dating is for 'desperate people' as some people think. So why is it that more and more Gen Y youths are turning to the internet in search for love?
See, according to eHarmony, the registration of youths aged 18-24 has risen to a whooping 381% since 2008. Desperate huh? Well, one in five of these Gen Ys believe online dating is for the desperate. Is it now? I don’t believe over the years, the number of ‘desperate youths’ has increased.

"The interesting thing is everyone seems to be doing it, but no-one seems to be talking about it," said spokeswoman Sarah Mason. "Our own judgment of ourselves is so much harsher than our friend's judgment of us and that's the disconnect, where we worry what people think of us."
To the younger generation, online dating is a better alternative than meeting someone in the club. Much as they still go clubbing, they don’t have to deal with the pressure of having to ‘hook up’ with someone while having their fun clubbing. There is online dating for that. Its much "better than going clubbing and meeting drunks who just want a one night stand," says Vanessa Johannesen who knows two people who have met ‘the one’ via online dating. "Obviously you take the good with bad and sort through the scammers and freaks, but it is possible to have a happy ending," she adds.
According to Jasmine Kilmartin you will find genuine people online once you weed out "weirdos and the ones just wanting sex".
The thing is, online dating is no longer for the ‘desperate’ as people used to believe before - or as a few of us still hold that old school belief. For most of us doing it, it’s a choice we have made. It doesn’t necessarily mean we have failed dating in the traditional way. We just think its better!

It wasn't too long ago that if you said you met your partner online that most people would look at you like you were crazy. In fact just last year a co-worker of mine thought that of me when I said I met my wife online, only later to find out that he was also secretly pursuing an online relationship. I guess while sheer numbers have increased , a number of people (including some of those that are actively dating online) are looking down apon it.
